Pinterest Inspired Stacked Frame Tutorial

I love Pinterest.  It’s like porn for crafty chicks.  I found this tutorial from Positively Splendid on how to make a stacked frame:  Image

Pretty cool right?  I thought so too.  So I went ahead and using this tutorial made my own version using chalkboard paint.

Supplies needed:

  • Chalkboard spray paint
  • coordinating color spray paint for frame
  • cheap 4×6 frame
  • wooden plaque
  • sticky velcro
  • picture hanging brackets
  • chalkboard markers

First I painted my plaque and frame.  I painted the wooden plaque (on sale at Hobby Lobby for $4!) with chalkboard paint and used about three or four coats for a nice even coverage.

I chose a black 4×6 frame and spray painted it red.  I didn’t sand it down first so the result ends up looking a little distressed which I liked.

Now I needed to add the hardware to the back of the plaque.  Once it was dry, I flipped it over and added the picture hanging brackets directly in the upper middle part of the plaque.

ImageOnce the frame was dry, I added the sticky velcro to the back.  I decided to add velcro to all four sides of the frame.  I also cut the back flap away so that there was no extra bulk when it attached to the plaque.

Image

Almost done!

Now I need to add the matching pieces of velcro to the plaque.  To do this accurately, I swiped some chalk onto the velcro on the red frame and then pressed the frame onto the chalkboard plaque leaving the markings of where I need my velcro to be.  Image

After I blew away the remnants, I was left with a distinct impression and was able to easily attach my velcro.

Now I can attach the frame to the chalkboard for the *almost* finished product!

Now here is the fun part.  IF you are artistically talented (unlike my example I’m about to show you) You can decorate this frame with chalk or chalkboard markers.  I discovered chalkboard markers after I had already given the gift or I would have used those instead.  They are much easier to use and the colors are much more clear.

Image

INSTEAD- I grabbed my daughters sidewalk chalk and quickly wrote the details I wanted on my plaque.  Please ignore my lack of artistry- apparently sidewalk chalk is not a medium I am fluent in…

BUT you get the idea.  And hopefully when you make yours you will use the chalkboard markers and it will be much much prettier than my chicken scratch handwriting.

This frame was for super sweet newborn baby boy, but I’m thinking of doing something a bit bigger using plywood, an 11×16 frame, and hanging my wedding photos.

Thanks for reading and happy crafting!

I’m baaaaack! With Big news!

So it’s been awhile.  Christmas has passed- Merry late Christmas/Holiday BTW… AND- we found out we are expecting (YAY!)

Now the new year has started and I have a TON of projects that I’m hoping to complete.  Probably too many.  But for some reason I love torturing myself with projects even though I have NO time at all to complete them.  I work, I go to school, I sew…I’m crazy for doing all of this….  Pinterest does not help either- but that is a whole other argument..

First things first.  Baby #2 is ON THE WAY!!  I’m halfway there- baby is halfway done baking, perfectly healthy, and we have found out it’s a BOY!  I’m THRILLED.  I have a little girl who is pure princess- but a little boy??  This is exciting!  So my focus these days is of course- decorating his room.

He will be moving into Ms. Priss’ baby room and she will be moving into her big girl room for good.  Right now- she spends time in both and continues to fall asleep in the converted crib- so that will have to change soon.

The idea I have for the nursery is based on colors.  Greens, blues, reds, oranges, yellows..and prints.  I love the look of the more eclectic nurseries that really do not have a theme but incorporate all sorts of different colorful items.  So that’s what I plan to go for.

To start- I’ve ordered the fabric. Why I feel that making the bedding myself is a good idea is beyond me- but I’m going to try…at least I have a pattern to go by.  I want to make a blanket, crib skirt, crib sheet, pillow accents and bumper or rail guards

Wanna see my choices??  Of COURSE you do.  :)

So with the bedding fabric chosen, I need to figure out art work, and wall color.  I have my eye on this mobile from the Museum Store Company:

And here are some other design elements that I’m thinking of.

Artwork all from allposters.com:

And the rug:

So using the existing cherry colored nursery furniture and these elements, I’m hoping to create a cool bright space suitable for a little boy.  I cannot WAIT to get started.  First I will start the bedding, and THEN invite/bribe some heathy able-bodied friends over to help me paint.  :)   I’m still not sure about paint colors- I’m leaning towards a gray- but it’s such a popular color right now- I might go a different route.  We’ll see.

Top Ten Fall Wreath Inspirations

I posted yesterday about the Halloween wreath I made, but I’ve decided that once Halloween is over next week- I’m gonna need a Fall one.

In Texas, Fall doesn’t really start until November because it’s hard to feel seasonal when it’s 90+ degrees outside.  Sheesh.  I’m so glad our weather is finally cooling off- because it’s been a brutal summer.

So I’m off to Pinterest and Google to get some awesome ideas for fall wreath inspiration!

I already have burlap- so I think I want to use that as my base- but I have no idea what I want to do with it or how to work with it.

1.  Check out this beauty!  I love love this wreath.  I like the fact that the burlap is ruffled and there is a nice tutorial explaining the process.  I also love the monogram.

2.  Craftaholics Anonymous is always on spot with design for the holidays.  I love the simplicity of this wreath and the flowers are removable to change with the seasons.

3.  I really like the fullness of this one and there is a link to the tutorial!

4.  This one is super cute!  I like the idea of using rosettes and a tutorial is linked.

5.  This one is using yarn and felt to create a Fall look and it includes a tutorial!

6.  I really love the look of this one too.  Not sure how to recreate the moss effect though and I cannot find a tutorial for this wreath or the credit.

7.  Here is another cool version of the one above in a square format:

8. And another yarn wreath that is super colorful with a tutorial!

9.  Here’s another using rosettes and a grapevine wreath.  AND did you know you can print ON fabric?!  Sweet!

10.  I also like this idea of tying fabric scraps around a wreath form to create a fabric wreath.  I can use the rest of my Fall fabric I purchased last year!

So many ideas!  I wonder how mine will turn out?  I guess we will see soon!

Tutorial: Halloween Tulle Wreath

I made a Spooooky wreath!

This month has flown by.  I’ve had some things happen in my personal life so there hasn’t been much time for crafting or sewing or blogging, but I managed to make my Halloween wreath and here’s how you can make your own.

Supplies:

1 wicker wreath $1    (Dollar Tree)

Did I mention that I LOVE LOVE LOVE Dollar Tree?

5 tulle spools $3.99/each  (Hobby Lobby)

When I went they were having a special of 50% off!  Score!

I used 3 spools of black, 1 spool of purple, and 1/2 spool of orange

2 spools black ribbon $1  (Dollar Tree)

1 “BOO” sign $1 (Target $1 bins)

  • You can also find cool Halloween signs at Dollar Tree and Hobby Lobby as well

1 spool of floral wire $1  (Dollar Tree)

Total price of wreath is  ::drumroll::  $15!

I followed my friend Jill’s tutorial on her hilarious blog, Baby Rabies

This tutorial is super easy to follow and the gist of it is:

  1. Wrap the wreath in ribbon so the entire wreath is covered in black ribbon
  2. Cut tulle into strips- mine were about 8 inches long but the length will depend on how fluffy you want your wreath
  3. Tie strips onto wreath making sure the knot faces outward- I used three spools of black tulle, one spool of purple, and then 1/2 spool of orange.
  4. Attach sign using floral wire- you can attach anywhere you desire.  It’s up to you!
  5. Fluff and trim to your liking!
I apologize for the lack of step by step photos- I literally made this wreath so quickly and had to fly to Connecticut after half of it was completed- so it was very last minute and unplanned.

There is little room to fail on this project which makes it one I LIKE.  Even if your strips are uneven- like mine were- it still turns out okay!

Happy Hallowcrafting everybody!

Texas is on fire.

I was going to post a recipe today…but this took over instead.

It’s been a pretty brutal summer for us.  I mean we are used to hot summers with no rain, but this summer?  This summer seems to be the hottest summer ever.  And it actually IS the hottest on record, I believe.  Days and days and days of 100+ temps and NO rain whatsoever have turned this state into a giant matchbox.  And with the hurricane season in full force, while some parts of the country are drowning in floods, Texas is burning.

Google Reader Roundup

This is what I’m reading this week and what has inspired me:

1.  Craftbuds:  Photography tips for Bloggers the Basics.

Photography by Kelley Jordan

I love taking photos.  I’ve loved it since I was in highschool- I used to shoot with a regular fully manual Pentax K1000 back in the day.  Now that I’m digital, I suck a taking photos of inanimate objects and cannot making them look interesting.  I can take a pretty decent photo of a person, but things…not so much.  So this article was really helpful and is inspiring me to go home and work on my white balance because my pictures need some serious help.
